Fine art packing

Protecting art from the ground up

Every artwork is unique, and so are its packing and transport requirements. Our specially trained crews understand the sensitivity of valuable objects and apply packing methods specifically developed for fine art transportation and fine art shipping.

Core packing principles

Before transport, each piece is carefully assessed to determine the most appropriate handling and protection. In general, our packing approach follows a few key principles:

  • Surface protection: Sensitive surfaces are wrapped to prevent scratches, dust, or abrasion.

  • Cushioning: Shock-absorbing materials absorb vibration and reduce impact during handling.

  • Stability: Items are secured to prevent movement inside crates or packaging.

  • Custom adaptation: Packing is tailored to the shape, weight, and fragility of each object.

These principles ensure that every artwork - from small objects to large-scale sculptures - receives the protection it needs throughout the journey.

Custom crating

Tailored protection for fragile and valuable artworks

For many artworks, standard packing solutions are not sufficient. Fragile materials, irregular shapes, high financial or cultural value, and frequent handling during transport often require a higher level of protection.

Bespoke wooden crates

Gosselin designs and builds custom wooden crates, tailored precisely to each artwork. Every crate is made to measure, taking into account the object’s dimensions, weight, materials, and transport conditions. The artwork is securely fixed inside the crate to prevent movement, vibration, or impact during transit.

International and European standards

Our crates are constructed using internationally compliant, treated wood and are suitable for both European and overseas transport. When required, crates can be adapted for oversized works, delicate surfaces, or particularly complex structures.

Custom crating is an integral part of our fine art transportation services, offering maximum protection and peace of mind for curators, registrars, and collectors alike.

Our previous art moves

From Brussels to Rome: another fine art journey successfully completed by Gosselin

In January, Gosselin had the privilege of handling a remarkable fine art move from Belgium to Italy, a project entrusted to us via the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The artworks travelled from NATO Boulevard Leopold III, Brussels to their new home at the Museo della Civiltà Romana in Rome.
Arne Quinze Beijing transport

Belgian art in Beijing

For the FPS Foreign Affairs, Gosselin moved a work of art by renowned artist Arne Quinze. The sculpture and accompanying pedestal were transported from Sint-Martems-Latem to Liège airport. From there, the more than 2-tonne artwork flew to Beijing.

Barbara Savelli and her team moved a statue weighing 4,000 kilograms and measuring three meters in length from Belgium to Venice in the spring of 2022. Recently, it was time to move the art back to Belgium. Yet another ideal job for Gosselin Moving and Heavy, working together in perfect tandem.

Travelling exhibitions demand expert packing

Gosselin completed a new fine art move for the National Archeologic Museum, Aquilea. Twenty-five works of ancient art had to be moved from Italy to Lithuania, and the museum was looking for a packing expert.

A difficult move with a tight schedule? Piece of cake for Gosselin

Moving a three-meter-long statue that weighs about 4,000 kilograms all the way from Belgium to Venice is a project that normally requires several weeks of preparations. Barbara Savelli of Gosselin Italy only had one week to get the job done. The project resulted in a wonderful collaboration between Gosselin Moving and Heavy.
