Shipping motor vehicles registered in Italy for export
For anyone interested in exporting motor vehicles or trailers across the Italian border, it’s important to know that there are new regulations in place. You have to request to ACI (Automobile Club Italia) or directly to the Ufficio della Motorizzazione (Department of Motor Vehicles) the cancellation of your vehicle from the national vehicle archive PRA Pubblico Registro Automobilistico, by returning the relevant plates and the registration certificate.
The cancellation is granted on the condition that the vehicle has passed inspection, not earlier than 6 months from the date of the cancellation request.
In order to cross the border for the purpose of export, the canceled vehicle may only be driven on roads if it is equipped with the Foglio di Via (road permit for vehicles destined for import/export) document and the temporary plate provided by ACI.
This new regulation is a relevant change to the previous practice in which the cancellation of the vehicle registration could be applied for by the vehicle owner after the actual re-registration abroad had been finalized with the intervention of the Italian Consular Offices.
What you need to do:
- Have your motor vehicle inspected not sooner than 6 months before your departure date
- Submit the request to cancel the vehicle registration by returning the plates and registration certificate
- You will receive an expulsion order authorization and temporary plates for transit and border crossings
